I had a friend complain to me today, that we should not be required to take classes we will not need for our major. While it was painful for me to attend some of my classes like theater 101 or wrack my brian for hours on material that I would never really remember after the exam, these classes are important.
First, taking breath classes opens your mind to different perspectives, a vital skill for the real world. Some of my classes it wasn't more the content then just interacting with people who think differently than me. In classes that are for your specific major you normally are surrounded by mostly like minds. In breath classes its a hodgepodge of different students that gives you a real perspective on how the world will be.
Second they make us well rounded. There are some basic things we should know. As a society we should be well educated. By enriching our lives with different mediums of information from the sciences to the arts we are going to be more apt to make more connections to other parts of our lives.
I know it sucks to take classes that may or may not interest us, but in the end i think they are worth it.

Cat has a Cone

On Monday I took my cat in to get spayed. Something that I recommend everyone to do. I would even go on to say that everyone should do it as soon as possible. This is because unless your cat is going to be a pure bred breeding cat, it is uncomfortable for the cat to be in heat. Also there is a huge problem with unwanted pets in shelters so allowing your cat to have unwanted litters will just intensify the problem.
Well, my kitten was driving me crazy because she went into heat before she could get spayed and was excited to give us both peace by doing this procedure. What I wasn't expecting, was how even though she was super grumpy and was not a fan of the cone she still loved me. She still wanted to snuggle and even though she hissed every time I had to put the cone back on her when she maneuvered a way to take it off she still would purr when I pet her. This unconditional love was something that i forget or take for granted. It was definitely unexpected to see that even though to her I had just put her through hell, for her own good, she still loved me. Never thought my cat would teach me so much.

Tuition Hikes!

The last couple days or even the past year has surged a riot among students here in Ellensburg and all over the country. Here at Central Washington University, students had a walkout on Friday. They also are going to field trip to Olympia to show our representatives how they are feeling about the 14% tuition increase for the following year, along with the major bills affecting college students. Though I must say I had recently read that a College in Alberta, Canada had an interesting approach to how to show their representatives how they were feeling. About 500 students decided to dress down to just their underwear or wore garbage bags to make a statement that they are too poor to buy clothes. I thought this was brilliant. While I do think that going to Olympia is important, it is crucial that others start thinking out of the box to make a larger message that students mean business.

School is better when it's sunny!

I hate winter quarter. There is nothing worse than having to deal with shorter days and an a shorter quarter but still have the same amount of work crammed in!! Not only that but you sometimes get stuck here with no way to escape to a larger city because all passes are closed. It is the time of year that makes it hard to drive, walk and be with no sympathy from anyone because everyone has to deal with it. Today, though, was different. There was sunshine! It was a day that I actually woke up from the sun peaking through my window. I had motivation to walk to campus and felt more efficient. All around i saw people a little more excited to be on campus. I saw someone taking a nap on the lawn. I ran into others who were studying outdoors. This is what you see in movies and pictures in brochures. This is why winter quarter is such a drag, not enough natural sunlight to remind us why school is more than just work but it shapes us to who we become. I hope there are more days to come!

Valentine's Day

Today is the kind of day that it hits me that it is almost the end of January and thus I must think about love, my relationship standing and the date of February 14th. This year I I'm so indifferent. I am all about having fun and friendship with the ones I love but Valentine's Day seems to be even more over hyped than Christmas, a hard feat! I just believe in being thoughtful and surprise. I don't think forcing ourselves to look into our relationships and make a day into a bigger deal than it has to be consume us. For most its just a day that signifies either absolutely nothing or where they stand in their life. Though for me it just means that i see a lot of people be disappointed in loves or even worse feel upset at themselves for lack of a lusty love life. Maybe i am a romantic but i just think that love has an element of surprise. You should have plans because you get inspired to do so not because a date on the calendar tells you to. It is like stating the only day you can be romantic is February 14th? I would hope that relationships everywhere would be stronger and full of more romance! That people would do little things always and through out the year, because one day is just not enough.

All I can say is that after all the has happened in Haiti, it really puts things in perspective. It seems to be that the more we have and the more comforts and luxuries we take for granted the more we complain and whine. It seems that the ones who have so little are so grateful. It scares me to think that the more money and power one obtains the less they are willing to appreciate life, compassion and gratitude. While there are many people of power such as Bill Gates who do give and do find the importance to be grateful and give back to those who do not have as much, there are just too many times that you see whiny teenagers on MTV's My Super Sweet Sixteen where they think their life is over if they did not get that $300,000 car. We love seeing these types of people and giving them undeserved attention and glory instead of focusing on those who give hope or at the very least do not complain about what material possessions they have and it is only during times of crisis that we pay any attention to them. It just really reminds me and all of us where we really hold valuable in our day to day lives.

Conan!!

Today Conan O'brien posted a statement stating that if NBC decides to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 he will leave. This is after much discussion about moving Jay Leno's show to 11:35 due to bad ratings in the past six months of being on air. I personally can't blame him. I am a big Conan fan. Many of nights staying up since my early years watching him he brings a sense of comfort. He was the link to spending time with my sister and late nights writing papers for school. When he decided to leave New York and Late Night for the coveted spot on the Tonight Show I was proud and excited for my favorite ginger man! Now that NBC wants to change things on him after six month of being on air it seems not only unfair but down right dishonest. The Tonight Show is at 11:35 not doubt about it. Changing it seems absurd and i stand with Conan. If he chooses to leave I will watch him where ever he goes. This man has more comedy than most comedians have in their fingers. Being part of so many famous entities before the Tonight Show all I can think is that he can succeed. As for NBC if they loose him I can only think that it will be one of their biggest mistakes they've ever made and may not ever really recover from the loss

Welcome
